2019 Millennial’s Buying Guide

In today’s real estate market it’s hard to know which way to go. There are many factors that go into every real estate transaction. Many younger people are choosing to either rent or stay at home longer because they don’t see the value or benefits of homeownership. The Millennial age group (born between 1982-2000) makes up about 25% of our total population. This group could be split into different categories based on age, income, job, marital and familial status. It is important that as agents we educate all people, especially this group as to the benefits of homeownership.

As in most generations there are those that bought a home early in life and those that didn’t. What has become increasingly clear is the amount of total savings that people who bought early in life have versus those that either bought a home later in life or didn’t buy at all. Reports have shown that the stability of homeownership has a direct correlation to the amount of retirement and personal savings by the age of 65. Now, there are factors in life that may contribute to some speedbumps along the way (job loss, medical conditions and the ugly word DIVORCE) which have forced things like short sales and foreclosures. These factors have always been around, but with today’s rapid-fire media availability on our tv’s, phones and on social media it means making an informed decision about buying a home is even more important now more than ever.

I believe as Realtors and Lenders, it is our duty to educate consumers and crucial first step in the process. Whether an agent is 22 and fresh out of real estate school or has been in the business for 25 years, the key to attracting today’s buyer is knowing how they think and what motivates them. Staying on top of trends and market movement goes a long way to reassuring most Millennial buyers. I feel that my as experience as a South Jersey real estate agent can help these buyers.
